Mpho Louisa Phalatse, born on November 7, 1977, is a South African medical doctor and politician [1, 3]. She was the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality from November 22, 2021, until she was removed from office through a motion of no-confidence on January 26, 2023 [1].
Phalatse was born in Pretoria, South Africa, and spent her early years living with her grandmother in Hebron, near Tshwane, before joining her parents in Mabopane [4]. Both of her parents were educators [4]. She pursued her medical education at Sefako Makgatho University and MEDUNSA, completing her internship at Tembisa Hospital in 2005 [2]. Following her internship, she did community service in the medical field [2].
As a member of the Democratic Alliance, Phalatse has been actively involved in politics [1]. In November 2021, she made history as the first woman mayor of the City of Johannesburg [4, 6]. However, her term was cut short in January 2023 following a motion of no-confidence [1].
Phalatse is married to Madimetja Lucky Phakeng and is a mother as well [3]. With a strong background in both medicine and politics, Mpho Phalatse has made significant strides in her career and continues to contribute to South Africa’s political landscape.
