Thuso Mbedu (born 8 July 1991) is a South African actress who first rose to prominence for her portrayal of Boni Khumalo in Saints and Sinners. She received further recognition for her portrayal of Kitso Medupe on's Scandal!. Mbedu was nominated for an Emmy Award for her role in the telenovela Is'Thunzi, which has been called "one of the most compelling television programmes on South African television" by Mail & Guardian.

Early Life

Thuso Mbedu was born Thuso Nokwanda Mbedu on 8 July 1991 at Midlands Hospital in the city of Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. Speaking to DJ Fresh on his Metro FM breakfast show, Mbedu stated that she has always been called Nokwanda by her family despite being wildly known as Thuso. Further stating that Thuso is a Sotho name while Nokwanda is Zulu.

Mbedu lost her mother at the age of 4 and was raised by her grandmother. She did not have a relationship with her father (he passed away when she was 21), “My father was never part of my life. My reality was being brought up by my grandmother and I really never had that gap of not having my parents in my life,” said Mbedu once said in an interview. In 2012 while Mbedu was approaching the end of her studies her only guardian and grandmother passed away leaving her orphaned.

She has a sister named Masentle Nomalungelo Mbedu.

Mbedu went to Pelham Primary School and then Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School. She attended University of Witwatersrand from 2010-2013, graduating Cum Laude with an Honours and majoring in Physical Theatre and Performing Arts Management.
