Siyabonga Thwala is a South African television and stage actor, television host and producer. He portrays a character of Mpiyakhe Zungu on Mzansi Magic's IsiBaya. Siyabonga Thwala has starred and appeared in a number of high profile television shows in South Africa. He starred as newspaper publisher Vusi Zwane opposite Luthuli Dlamini on's Scandal! when the first went on air in 2005, a role that would earn him his first Golden Horn. In 2007 he joined the cast of Generations as Paul Mashaba opposite Seputla Sebogodi. Siyabonga Thwala also portrayed the character of Busani Mojalefa on Muvhango and briefly returned to as DH Radebe on Rhythm City opposite Jamie Bartlett. In 2018 he created and hosted a documentary series, Yobe (A Zulu word for "Forgive").

Scandal! as Vusi Zwane

Siyabonga Thwala was cast in role of Vusi Zwane on the etv then new soap opera, Scandal!, alongside Luthuli Dlamini, Ashley Dowds and Rami Chuene. Early on the character of Vusi Zwane was central to the story; however, along with that of Stan Nyathi, they would not last. The fate of Scandal! would eventually rest upon the shoulders of Masasa Mbangeni, Dawn Matthews, Sello Maake Ka-Ncube, Louise Barnes, the late Sandy Mokwena - who arguably saw the show through its massive gains before all of them leaving with the exception of Sandy Mokwena was on the show from day until his passing.

Muvhango as Busani Mojalefa

Siyabonga Thwala joined the cast of Muvhango in a leading role as Busani Mojalefa. However, unlike in Scandal!, Muvhango was already a well established show with, at the time, virtually no competition in the 09:00pm slot. Furthermore, Muvhango boasted acting kingpins such as Sindi Dlathu, who had anchored the show from the day it debuted, as well as Maumela Mahuwa, Ndivhuho Mutsila, Gabriel Temudzani, and MacDonald Ndou.

Generations as Paul Mashaba

Siyabonga Thwala joined a star studded Generations to portray the character of Paul Mashaba. Arguably, although with a certain amount of responsibility to the character, the show was number one and had some of the best actors in South Africa including Seputla Sebogodi, Sonia Mbele, Rapulana Seiphemo, and Menzi Ngubane among other. Siyabonga Thwala's portrayal of Paul Mashaba, at least at the time, brought far greater fame and acclaim.

IsiBaya as Mpiyakhe Zungu

Siyabonga Thwala has come to be known and celebrated for his much heralded portrayal of Mpiyakhe Zungu. He was cast in an original The Bomb Shelter/ Mzansi Magic telenovela, IsiBaya - which was later transformed into a daily soap opera - opposite Bheki Mkhwane. The pair has anchor IsiBaya since 2013. Despite having starred in some of the biggest prime time shows in South Africa, Siyabonga Thwala is by far easily recognised for his role as Mpiyakhe Zungu thanks to the early successes of IsiBaya.

Film Career

Siyabonga Thwala portrayed the character of Force in the 1995 feature film, Hearts & Minds and co-starred in the 2019 South African film, Back of the Moon with Richard Lukunku and Moneoa Moshesh.
