Sindi Dlathu (born 4 January 1974) is a South African actress widely known as "Thandaza", for her portrayal of that character on SABC 2's flagship soap opera, Muvhango. She led the cast of Muvhango from the show's debut in 1997 until her character was written off 20 years later. Sindi Dlathu stars on 1Magic's The River as Lindiwe Dlamini alongside Hlomla Dandala since January 2018.
Life and Career
She won the national miming competition at age 11. A the age of 12 she entered the Shell Road to Fame contest and reached the finals. Sindi Dlathu was mentored by Mahotella Queen member, Nomsa Mtolo about the ins and outs of the entertainment industry.
She attended the auditions for Mbongeni Ngema’s play, Sarafina! which saw her cast as the understudy for the title character and went to perform in the United States of America (USA). While on tour with Sarafina she met Randy Crawford who asked to stay behind and perform with her.
In the film adaptation of Sarafina! Sindi Dlathu worked alongside American actress Whoopi Goldberg and was commissioned as an assistant choreographer to Michael Peters, who responsible for many of Michael Jackson's dance routines.
Sindi Dlathu is widely know for her portrayal of "Thandaza" on SABC 2's flagship soap opera. The role she held for over two decades."Muvhango has become my second home. I share the joys and lows of my life with this soapie - it's pure bliss", she was quoted in the Move! magazine interview.
Early on in her career she had a main role on the Penguin Films produced SABC 1 comedy, Khululeka which starred the late Joe Mafela. Sindi Dlathu portrayed the character of Nomfundo on SABC 1's long running educational television series, Soul City.
Sindi Dlathu was cast in Mbongeni Ngema’s play, Sarafina! as the understudy for the title character and went to perform in the United States of America (USA). In 1997 she was in the FNB Vita Award-winning Duma Ndlovu's Game (Stage Play), where she performed with Mary Twala, Abigail Kubheka, and Nomhle Nkonyeni. Her first TV part was in Khululeka, where she completed an outstanding series. Her other stage credits include Madiepetsana and The Suit.
Sindi Dlathu is married to Bheki Shongwe and they have two children. She has a sister, Zanele Sangweni, who is married to businessman, Matome Meela.
In 2015 she was rushed to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg where she was treated for severe fatigue. "She didn't collapse. She was just not feeling well. When she complained, we decided not to take chances and sent her to hospital. She was discharged after a day. We gave her a few days to recover," Muvhango publicist, Amanda Ngudle, was quoted by Channel24.
