While in the United States he worked as a theatrical producer and was instrumental in raising overseas interest in the South African Township stories.
In 1985 he founded Woza Afrika Foundation, which sough to the arts in South Africa and produced shows which featured South African artists. Duma Ndlovu was instrumental in bring to Broadway some of South Africa's finest plays including Mbongeni Ngema's Woza Albert! and Asinamali. As the apartheid system was crumbling, the return home to South Africa for many was eminent; in his final years in New York Duma Ndlovu was teaching African American literature and music at the State University of New York, Stony Brook.
