AKA (born Kiernan Jarryd Forbes; 28 January 1988) is a South African hip hop artist, record producer and businessman. As his career reached prominence, AKA became increasingly known for his opinions, braggadocio and feuds. Even as he undoubtedly becomes South Africa's hip hop mega star, AKA continues to solicit and engage in controversy.

AKA is arguably one of the most talented, prolific, influential and progressive artists of his generation. He has continually released music and toured since reaching stardom and has undoubtedly remained among the pacesetters in the South African Music since 2011 with fans and detractors alike often expecting him to do well at the awards. Perhaps his career, along with those of Kwesta and Cassper Nyovest, has served to propel forward the genre hip hop in South Africa.

Prominence: 2011 - to date

AKA rose to prominence with the release of his debut solo studio album, Altar Ego. The album was well received and sold over 40 000 copies earning a platinum certification by RiSA. At the 2011 Metro FM Music Awards Altar Ego won best produced album and best hip hop album while AKA won best newcomer ahead of Zahara and Mi Casa.

In 2014 AKA released his second studio album, Levels. The album was a runaway critical and commercial success receiving widespread international attention with nominations at the BET Awards, MOBO Awards, Kora Awards and MTV Europe Music Awards. As of 2019 Levels is certified 7x platinum by RiSA. The album is arguably AKA's best and most successful to date; it has become a cultural icon with period-defining songs such as Jealousy, Run Jozi (Godly), All Eyes On Me and Congratulate.

In 2017 a collaborative album, with Anatii - Be Careful What You Wish For, was released. The album led with singles, 10 Fingers , Don't Forget to Pray and Holy Mountain.

In 2018 AKA returned with his third solo effort, Touch My Blood. The album is a bold step forward; it is well crafted and well put together with an unmistakable universal feel - while still adhering to local appeal. Ultimately in Touch My Blood AKA exhibits a lot of growth as artist as well as certain level of fearlessness in terms of exploring musically. The album leads with the acclaimed The World Is Yours as well as Caiphus Song and the much heralded Fela In Versace was the sixth single release in the second half of 2018.

Media and Public Image

AKA is among the most active celebrities on social media; as of August, with combined total of over 6.5 million followers across Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. He is also among those who don't often hold back in the face of criticism and trolls.

He has remained among the leading news makers in South Africa; perhaps since the night of 2011 Metro FM Music Awards in Mbombela, Mpumalanga. AKA has made headlines for his music, awards, personal life, social media antics and most notably for his prolonged feud with fellow hip hop artist Cassper Nyovest.

Personal Life

AKA was rumoured to be in a relationship with South African DJ, Zinhle Jiyane. He denied this but the media reports persisted and fellow celebrities gave their opinions which largely served to confirm that the media reports were true. As now history attest, they were together and had a daughter, Kairo Forbes, during that period. Just as their relationship stopped being a rumour, a new rumour surfaced linking AKA to South African media darling Bonang Matheba and was soon confirmed by Zinhle Jiyane in a 10 September 2015 post titled 'If I fail or If I Succeed, At Least I did As I Believe' on her blog[1].

"A week before our daughter was born, I found out about an affair between Kiernan (the father of my child) and Bonang Matheba. I also received confirmation of all rumours through an honest conversation which I had with Kiernan, who confirmed that the affair had been going on for over 5 months," Zinhle Jiyane wrote in her blog post.

AKA later broke up with Bonang Matheba and they both exchange somewhat publicised unpleasantries. AKA has since rekindled his relationship with Zinhle Jiyane.
