Richard Maponya (24 December 1920-6 January 2020) was a South African business tycoon, property developer and a reluctant political activist. He was revered for having built a business empire in the face of brutal Apartheid regime that sought to restrict the progress of Black South Africans. In 2007, a crown jewel of his illustrious business career - Maponya Mall - opened for business. In the early hours of Monday 06 January 2020, Richard Maponya died after a short illness. He was aged 99 years old.
