Nomzamo Mbatha is a South African actress. She initially gained public attention as a runner-up in the 2012 MTV Base VJ Search where she lost to Nomuzi Mabena. At the time Mbatha was a student at the University of Cape Town where she was studying BCom Accounting. She went on to gained widespread fame as an actress on then new telenovela IsiBaya where she portrayed a character of Thandeka Zungu.

Early Life

Nomzamo Mbatha was born on 13 July 1990 in the KwaMashu township in the north west of the city of Durban in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. She has four brothers including actor Zamani Mbatha and at least two known sisters - one of whom, Matu Dlamini †, has since passed away.

Education

Nomzamo Mbatha attended Sihlezi Primary School in KwaMhlanga and Bechet High School in Sydenham. Upon matriculating she enrolled at the University of Cape Town where she studied a Bachelor of Commerce accounting, she initially dropped out following her near successful run on the 2012 MTV Base Africa VJ Search and IsiBaya call up, however she returned and completed her degree graduating in 2018.

Career; 2012 - to date

In 2012 Nomzamo Mbatha auditioned for the MTV Base Africa VJ Search and made it to the top three, along with Naledi Radebe, they lost to Moozlie.

In 2012 she was cast on the then new Mzansi Magic telenovela, IsiBaya, alongside acting heavyweights Siyabonga Thwala, Thembi Nyandeni, Tumisho Masha and Bheki Mkhwane. While she often spoke modestly of those early days, Nomzamo Mbatha shone from the onset, her portrayal of Thandeka Zungu was a subject of praise, as well as her onscreen chemistry with co-star Sdumo Mtshali.

In 2015 Nomzamo Mbatha hosted a 13 part SABC 1 television show, Holiday Swap. That same year she began starring on the E.tve.tv original drama series, Umlilo, where she portrayed the character of Khwezi and acted alongside Hamilton Dlamini, Nokuthula Ledwaba, Gcina Mkhize, Omuhle Gela and Thato Molamu.

She portrayed the character of Palesa on the Mzansi Magic prison drama,Lockdown. Nomzamo Mbatha hosted the tenth season of All Access Mzansi and the first season of BET A-List. She has also appeared on Code Green, Lip Sync Battle Africa, Ridiculousness Africa, The Bantu Hour and The Comedy Central Roast.

Film Career

In 2015 Nomzamo Mbatha starred in the South African romantic comedy, Tell Me Sweet Something alongside Maps Maponyane. She has also appeared on The Jakes Are Missing and All About Love.

Activism

Nomzamo Mbatha is a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’s (UNHCR) global goodwill ambassador. It has been reported that she attracted the attention of UNHCR through her extensive work in human rights activism.

She spoke at the first ever TEDx event to be held at a refugee camp, the TEDxKakumaCamp took place at the centre of Turkana County, a refugee camp situated in northwestern Kenya.

Since 2017 Nomzamo Mbatha has worked in close in cooperation with UNHCR as a supporter and advocate for UNHCR’s LuQuLuQu campaign, raising awareness for the forcibly displaced in Africa. Her engagement includes visits to experience UNHCR’s life-saving work in camps and settlements in Malawi, Kenya and South Sudan.
